Four wheel drive systems

"All Wheel Drive"

All Wheel Drive or AWD - full time symmetric AWD
not to be confused with automatic asymmetric AWD

Only mode in AWD is 4WD. Full time.

No 2WD available.

No 4WD "low" available.

AWD is almost useless beyond pavement.

Requires:

transfer case and center differential

two drive shafts

two axle differentials

two powered axles

what is the difference between AWD and full time 4WD?

what other 4x4 systems are available?
